We didn’t switch beds because we wanted yet another dog bed around the house. We switched because the one Boqui had stopped being cleanable.
He was going through early puppyhood, recovering from a broken leg, and he had an accident. The old bed had no waterproof layer. When liquid soaked into the foam, it was over. No amount of washing got it out. The smell stayed.

Why a waterproof layer is the feature most beds skip
Most reviews of washable small dog beds mention “removable cover” and move on. A washable cover is great, but it’s not enough on its own.
The Bedsure has two layers of protection: a zippered corduroy fleece cover that goes in the washing machine, and a TPU waterproof layer built into the sleeping surface that protects the foam underneath. It’s not a separate liner you remove; it’s part of the bed’s construction. That layer is what most beds skip. It’s also the one that makes the difference between a bed you can actually clean and one you eventually throw out.
We learned this the hard way. Boqui’s previous bed had a removable cover, but nothing protecting the foam underneath. One accident went straight through to the base. The foam held it. No washing machine fixes that.
A washable cover without waterproof protection over the foam is only half a solution. For a puppy or a senior dog, you need a bed that’s both washable and waterproof.
Why a three-sided bolster works better for small dogs

Boqui sleeps in it differently depending on his mood. Sometimes his head rests over the bolster edge, chin propped up, completely relaxed. When he had his cast, he’d fling his leg over the side bolster while the rest of his body stayed flat on the ground.

The low profile front also matters — a puppy who hasn’t figured out his own dimensions yet can step in and out without effort. Same applies to older dogs with any joint stiffness.
What the memory foam and egg-crate base actually does for a 4–5 lb dog
Most small memory foam dog bed content is written for Labs and Goldens: hip dysplasia, senior dogs, 60-pound bodies needing firm foam. That’s real, but it’s not the whole picture.
Pomeranians are small, but they’re more active than they look. They jump, they launch themselves off furniture, they have surprisingly busy joints for a dog this size. As Boqui can attest, even a puppy in normal development benefits from a surface that distributes weight properly rather than letting a small body sink unevenly into cheap fill.
The Bedsure base uses two foam layers:
- High-density memory foam for pressure relief and joint support
- Egg-crate foam to distribute weight evenly across the surface
For a Pom, this is the right construction. You don’t need the density required for a 70-pound dog, but you do need something that won’t compress flat within a week. The bolster is filled separately and stays lofted.
The foam is also certified by OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and CertiPUR-US, which means the materials have been tested for harmful chemicals and low VOC emissions — relevant if you care about what your dog is breathing while he sleeps face-down in the foam for eight hours.
It doesn’t look like an orthopedic pet bed
This isn’t the most important thing, but it’s not nothing.
A lot of orthopedic beds look exactly like what they are: clinical, functional, the visual language of a big-box pet store in foam and loud fabric. The Bedsure in cream reads differently.
The corduroy cover, the neutral color, the clean silhouette. It’s clearly a dog bed, but a considered one. In a living room, it sits without demanding attention.
